A mother got pregnant twice in a week – after being told she only had a 5% chance of conceiving after her first child.

Alina Luca later had daughters Ellie and Millie, who are not medically twins.

She had given up on having more children before getting pregnant TWICE in a week just a month later.

Alina, from Beckton, Newham, East London, said: “I got pregnant when I was already pregnant. I didn’t think it was possible.

“I asked the doctor, ‘Are you serious? How is it possible to get pregnant when you’re already pregnant?’

“They said it was very rare, but it happens. We found that they were conceived a week apart because one of them was smaller on the scan.

“It’s a miracle this happened to me.

“We prayed for a baby and said, ‘If it doesn’t happen, there’s nothing we can do about it,’ and then a month later it happened [of stopping to try] I found out that I am pregnant.

“It was a big shock for us.

“After processing it and doing a little research, I was really shocked and I was like, ‘Wow, it really happened and it really happened to me.’ It’s really amazing.”

Alina spent two years trying to have a second child with partner Rick Carmea, but doctors warned her it was unlikely due to an underactive thyroid.

But a month later, the 30-year-old found out she was pregnant and revealed during her 12-week scan that she was in fact expecting two babies – who had been conceived a week apart.

Known as superfetation, the incredibly rare phenomenon occurs when a second, new pregnancy occurs during a first pregnancy and can occur days or weeks after the first.

A striking photo shows Alina’s stomach stretched significantly while pregnant with her two daughters, Ellie and Millie Carmea, in March.

The mother-of-three, who was already a mother to a nine-year-old girl, found out she was pregnant again last August.

Alina said: “I always wanted a big family. I couldn’t get pregnant for two years and gave up.

“They told me I had a 5 to 10 percent chance of getting pregnant because I had an underactive thyroid.

“Last year I said I was giving up because I was upset and thought there was no point in trying again and if it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen.

“And after a month I found out I was pregnant. It was funny. I cried for joy because I was so happy.

“I called my sister and asked her to look at the pregnancy test to see if it was positive because I thought I was dreaming.”

Alina gave birth to her two daughters on March 15.

The pair gave birth at 35 weeks, with Millie weighing 4lbs 5oz – who was conceived first – and Ellie following a minute later at 4lbs 4oz.

The full-time mom has since set up an Instagram page to raise awareness of superfetal pregnancy.

Alina said: “Pregnancy was very hard and painful. I thought my back would break because my stomach was so big.

“I’m small. My skin was so tight and I had so many spots and I thought my tummy was about to explode.

“I was over the moon to hold her for the first time, it was amazing to be honest.

“You can see everything double – not just because you have two babies, but everything – your emotions and you’re more sensitive.

“If I tell people [her story] They look at me and think I’m crazy and wonder how that was possible.

“If someone had told me beforehand [her experience]I think I would be the same.”
