A mother has told how she feared children would die when a mad gunman fired shots from his garden.

Terrified, Emma Davis was walking her dog past Paul Ritchie’s Lanarkshire village house when he started making threats and attacked her pet.

The dog later had to be euthanized, reports the Daily Record.

The incident sparked a large armed police response and saw the 35-year-old businessman being dragged into Airdrie Sheriff Court, where he admitted using a paintball gun on Emma, 40, and the four children with whom she was together to have shot.

Ritchie was sentenced to 12 months in prison last year for sending politicians what a judge described as “disgusting” emails, including threats of shooting and beheading.

His victims included former Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow, former Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn, former Home Secretary Amber Rudd and SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford.

Emma said she was convinced he had a real gun and couldn’t believe what happened when she took the youngsters for a Sunday morning walk with their dog.

She said her Staffordshire Bull Terrier Maya had to be put down because of this.

Emma, 40, moved from the rural village of Dolphinton, Lanarkshire, following the shocking incident outside Ritchie’s Grange Cottage in October 2020.

She insisted she had never met Ritchie before. Emma said: “What happened that morning might be seen on a city street, but you wouldn’t expect it in a pretty, quiet village like Dolphinton.

“This stranger came out of his house screaming and cursing. He was threatening and his language was abominable.

“He kicked Maya, who flew across the sidewalk.

“He came back and I heard popping noises – he had armed himself with a gun and was standing on the birdbath in his back garden.

“We were absolutely no threat to him – I’m only 5ft 5” and a size 8 – and yet he shot in our direction as we backed up.

“It was horrible. I really thought the kids were going to die. It made no sense – it was crazy behavior.”

When police discovered that Ritchie’s gun was actually a paintball gun, it was of no consolation to Emma.

She said: “I had sleepless nights afterwards. We had to leave the area.”

Ritchie admitted to culpably and recklessly firing a paintball gun at Emma and four children.

He also admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the dog and assaulting two police officers.

Sheriff Hughes has delayed sentencing Ritchie to next month over background reports, including an evaluation of his mental health.

Bail continued.
