A woman who gives birth more than three months before her due date while on holiday in Mexico may face a £10.00 bill for the care of her premature baby.

Dawn Whitear, 33, traveled to Puerto Vallarta after being cleared to fly by doctors.

But just two days into their vacation, they went into labor and baby Hugo was born extremely premature, weighing less than 2 pounds, which is less than a bag of sugar.

Hugo has been in the hospital for four weeks with intestinal and blood problems.

Though their travel insurance will cover the cost of treatment, Dawn and her partner David are trying to raise the money to stay by his bedside while they wait to take him home.

The couple launched a crowdfunding appeal to raise the money.

David said Express.co.uk that Hugo was “extremely weak”.

“He’s 14 weeks early and on a ventilator,” he explained.

“He already had a blood transfusion as his blood counts were getting low. He also has some problems with his intestines, which they monitor.

“He is in intensive care and we will now be stuck in Mexico while he recovers to full strength so we can return home. It could take three to four months.”

David said they are “running out of money after all the bills we’ve had to pay up front” and now need somewhere close to the hospital so they can be close to their young son.

The couple, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, said they also needed money for everyday needs.

They estimate the cost of this, along with accommodation and other healthcare costs, could be as much as £10,000.

On their GoFundMe pageDavid wrote: “We came here for a holiday before our baby was due but he decided he wanted to come very early and now that we can’t return home to the UK to work and care for him.

“Hugo is now in intensive care and we will now be stuck in Mexico while he recovers to full strength so we can return home which could take 3-4 months.

“After all the bills we had to pay upfront, we are running out of money and now need to find somewhere to stay close to the hospital so we can be close to him if anything happens to him.

“We also have to get the essentials for daily needs. We would greatly appreciate any donation which will help us all get through this difficult and unsettled situation we are currently in. Thanks in advance.”

The couple have raised just under £5,000 so far. You can donate during a visit here.
