A mum who pretended to have cancer to trick well-wishers out of thousands of pounds to support her life of shopping and gaming has been told to pay back just £5.

Nicole Elkabbas, 44, raised over £45,000 after falsely claiming she had to pay for private ovarian cancer treatment in Spain – just days after doctors gave the all-clear.

The mother of one from Broadstairs, Kent, then squandered the money on holidays, Tottenham Hotspur tickets, gambling and dining out.

She has now been asked to repay just £5 because she has no financial assets or ability to repay her nearly 700 victims.

She was only caught after her consulting oncologist spotted her fundraising page asking for donations, which appeared to have been set up by her mother Delores – days after she examined her.

The former Harrods fashion consultant pleaded not guilty at her November 2020 trial, claiming she really believed she had cancer.

Canterbury Crown Court Judge Mark Weekes also sentenced Ms Elkabbas to two years and nine months in prison in November, describing her deception as “cunning and manipulative”.

At the sentencing hearing, he said: “You have prepared detailed and sometimes graphic accounts of the treatment you received in order to prevent those you had caught in your web of lies from paying you money.

“The whole time they were playing, shopping trips and enjoying luxury in Italy and Spain at their own expense.”

Her GoFundMe page, titled “Nicole Needs Our Help – Treatment,” featured a fragile photo taken months earlier after gallbladder surgery.

A message on the donation page said the “loving mother” who was “recently diagnosed” needed money for life-saving treatment.

In the end, the picture only hastened her capture after a now-former friend and leading London gynecologist stumbled across the GoFundMe page.

After quickly discovering that the photo was taken at Margate’s hospital – not in Spain – police contacted the Teknon Clinic in Barcelona, where she was allegedly staying.

The clinic said they had never heard of her, while the doctor treating her did not exist, according to Spanish media.
