A mother was left with a coin-sized hole in her stomach after contracting MRSA while undergoing a £16,000 ‘mummy makeover’ in hospital.

Melanie Sandberg was saving for surgeries to get her pre-pregnancy body back after having two babies in two years.

And just seven months after the birth of her youngest child, the 35-year-old had the procedure. It was a breast augmentation and a tummy tuck all in one – but three weeks into her surgery, Melanie became concerned.

The mother of three from Long Island, New York, noticed a hole in her abdomen where a drain had reopened during surgery and was getting bigger and more painful over time.

The gruesome hole grew to the size of a coin, so a few weeks after the procedure, Melanie rushed herself to the hospital and was told she had MRSA – a super bug notoriously resistant to most antibiotics.

The former elementary school teacher wants to warn others to pay attention to the symptoms.

Melanie said today from her home in the US: “I came home and it got bigger and deeper – it was an open wound.

“I literally had a hole in my stomach the size of a silver dollar coin.”

“I was diagnosed with MRSA and I remember realizing how bad things were.

“I knew beforehand it was bad, but I had no idea how serious it was.

“There was a deep hole in my stomach. It kept getting bigger and my stomach swelled up enormously.”

Melanie has undergone appropriate treatment for her condition and is now on the road to recovery.

“Now I’m finally healthy, I’m actually very happy with the results, but I had no idea how serious it is and how dangerous MRSA can be,” said the mother.

“I went to the hospital and was told I had MRSA – I was very worried and scared.

“It (the stomach) was an open wound the size of a silver coin, with pus spurting out.”

Melanie had her eldest child – Ava Galante – 14 years ago, but after two pregnancies in quick succession she gained weight earlier this year and “wanted her body back”.

The two-hour procedure took place on February 17, seven months after baby Gibson Paciullo was born, who is now ten months old.

Recalling the $20,000 surgery, the former teacher said, “When I woke up after the surgery, I felt terrible, I was in a lot of pain.

“But I remember thinking that in a couple of weeks I’ll be back to myself, I’ll have my body back and I could come back to life and feel better than ever.”

But when she was diagnosed with MRSA, Melanie was given a new drug to which the superbug is not resistant, and taught how to care for the wounds to help them heal properly.

This involved stuffing saline-soaked gauze down the hole to kill the infection.

The mother continued, “I had no idea about the complications and took it very lightly.

“Looking back, MRSA is highly contagious and I was at home with my three children, two of whom are very young – we are lucky it has not spread to them.

“Since I started sharing my story, so many other women have shared their stories with me, and it turns out so many have been through the same thing.

“Now I’m finally healthy, I’m actually very happy with the results.

“But I had no idea how serious it was and how dangerous MRSA can be.”
