A mother is upset and angry after a man reportedly shouted a racist remark at her as she walked home with her five-year-old daughter.

Mandy Singh said three male cyclists sped past her, pointing at her and her daughter and saying, “Look boys, two rubber rapids!”.

It’s a reference to the film Four Lions, which follows young Muslim men who hatch a plan to become suicide bombers.

Mandy considered the comment racist, BirminghamLive reports.

She was with her daughter returning from a garden center in Albrighton, Shropshire, when the incident happened around 1pm on Saturday 11 June.

Mandy has faltered, but the mother said she sadly knows her daughter will face similar incidents in her life because of the color of her skin.

The 37-year-old said: “We came back from the garden center in Albrighton, we were there at the soft play centre. We were walking by when three grown men rode by on bicycles.

“One turned to the other and said, ‘Look boys, two rubberized rapids!’ It’s a reference to the film Four Lions.

“They were all white and looked to be in their late thirties. I just ignored her, I was with my daughter so I didn’t want to upset her.

“And you never know what someone might do. But if she was a few years older, she might have asked what they meant.”

She added: “I know she faces things like this in life, but she shouldn’t have to. It annoyed me because ok it’s from a movie but in front of my five year old daughter?

“He also pointed to us. He must have known we would hear it when he said it as he rode past us.”

She has since reported the incident to West Mercia Police as a hate crime. Mandy says she has lived in Albrighton for almost ten years and this is the first time she has been subjected to a racist remark from a stranger.

The mother-of-one added: “My husband suggested I report it. I just don’t want it to happen to anyone else.

“I hope they can find them and tell them what they said is wrong and disturbing.”

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: “We can confirm that we have received a report of an alleged hate crime that took place at around 1pm on Saturday 11 June in Newport Drive, Albrighton.

“A woman was walking down the street with her five-year-old child when three men on bicycles passed her. One made a comment to the other two, which the woman took as a racist remark towards her and her child.

“The men are described as white and in their 30s. Officers have been in contact with the woman to discuss the matter.”
