“Mamma Mia!” based on the Broadway musical of the same name, based on hits by Swedish pop group ABBA. All of ABBA’s songs are catchy and fun, making them one of the few groups that can mix well with the auto musical. However, many of them are musically challenged, which can certainly make singing difficult for a performer like Pierce Brosnan. Luckily for the 007 star, he wasn’t the only one scared on set, according to Interview with GQ. Brosnan recalls:
“I think the thing that gave me the greatest consolation during the day of recording songs at Air Studios was meeting Stellan. [Skarsgård] and Colin [Firth] looks like rabbits caught in the headlights. They are extremely scared.”
Knowing he wasn’t alone in his horrors, Brosnan was able to relax and have a lot more fun during his time working on the film, as he mentioned in a Interview with Good Housekeeping.
“You know, I really think I should have done it sooner – maybe I could go back and remake some of my movies and put music in them. Imagine: a singing Bond! That would be something. But with ‘Mamma Mia!’ I got lucky, because I’m not just singing – I’m singing Abba, and people can’t help but get up and cheer when they hear these songs.”
“Mamma Mia!” continued to be wildly successful, releasing a sequel, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” in 2018, with discussions about a third film occasionally resurfacing. For someone who used to work as a secret agent to save the world, it’s surprising that playing a musical is Brosnan’s scariest mission as an actor. But once you start feeling ABBA’s music, there’s nothing to fear.
