Mutilated bodies with ‘cut off genitals’ found by Ukrainian army during cleanup

According to a senior Ukrainian official, the Ukrainian army has discovered dozens of mutilated bodies of civilians during a clean-up operation in liberated areas in the Kharkiv region.

Yevhen Yenin, Ukraine’s Deputy Interior Minister, announced that the country’s army has found the bodies of 52 civilians killed by the Russians during their occupation of the city of Izium in Kharkiv. Yenin noted that the corpses showed signs of torture. Some corpses also lacked genitals.

“Only during the previous day [the Ukrainian Armed Forces] have recaptured 12 settlements and are conducting cleanup operations there. Since the beginning of [counteroffensive], 118 settlements with a total civilian population of around 50,000 were recaptured; Clean-up operations were also carried out there,” Yenin said Monday on the 24/7 national newscast, as quoted by Ukraine’s Suspline news agency.

“We continue to find numerous bodies with signs of violent death, including broken ribs and skulls, men with hands tied behind their backs, with broken jaws and severed genitals,” Yenin added.

In addition to the 52 bodies, the Ukrainian army found 50 other bodies in Kharkiv Oblast on Sunday alone. In total, the Ukrainian army has discovered 168 bodies since the counteroffensive began. Yenin did not say exactly where the bodies were found.

Russian soldiers were forced to retreat from the city of Izium on September 10 after failing to repel the Ukrainian army’s counter-offensive. Less than a week later, Serhii Bolvinov, the chief police investigator for the Kharkiv region, announced that they had found mass graves containing more than 440 bodies near the liberated city.

On September 19, Ukrainian authorities exhumed 146 bodies from the makeshift site, including the bodies of women and two children. Oleh Synehubov, governor of Kharkiv Oblast, said some of the bodies had their hands tied. Other bodies bore wounds from explosives, shrapnel and knife stab wounds, as translated by Reuters.

However, the Kremlin dismissed reports of a mass grave in Izium as “lies”.

“Kyiv is propagating the same scenario in Izyum as in the provocation in Bucha,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
