‘My concern is for the children’ – Riverdance star on allegations of contest manipulation

Riverdance star Jean Butler has addressed the controversy surrounding the Irish dancing world.

Claims of competition manipulation and fraud have rocked An Coimisiun Le Rinci Gaelacha (CLRG), the global organization that governs Irish dance.

The CLRG has announced that it has appointed a former Court of Appeals judge to oversee an investigation into the fraud allegations.

Some Irish dance teachers and judges have been accused of rigging competitions.

Screenshots of text conversations are understood to have been handed to the CLRG in July.

The dance teachers, some of whom were based on the island of Ireland, asked for Feiseanna and offered to fix her.

Ms. Butler, who was born in New York, was the part-choreographer and lead performer on the original Riverdance. Her mother is from Co Mayo.

The choreographer said the allegations should be “properly investigated” and she is deeply concerned for the children involved.

“I saw the headlines like everyone else, I was deep into the show at the moment, so the headlines are kind of like what I heard,” she told Miriam O’Callaghan on RTÉ.

“I have empathy for the children above all, I feel that the dancers have put the years into it and I know what it’s like to work for competitions, so my concern at the moment is for the children.

“I think all of these allegations need to be thoroughly investigated and if anything good comes out when we find out what’s happening and we have a fresh start then we need to focus on that and really care about the kids.

“I left the Irish dance world in 1994, my last world championship was actually I think two weeks before the Eurovision Song Contest.

“So Irish dance culture and this world has changed completely and I can’t say how it is now because I’m outside of it.”
