A woman already suffering the pain of losing her two-month-old daughter says she was appalled by her cousin’s callousness.

Not only did she announce her pregnancy in a surprisingly cheerful way at the funeral, she also made reckless comments about how “blessed” she was to have a healthy baby.

The grieving mother lost her baby to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), with its devastation causing her to fall into a deep depression and being unable to get out of bed for weeks.

During that time, the unnamed 26-year-old says she has not received any letters of condolence from her cousin, who she refers to as Emily, or from any member of Emily’s family. She was injured but brushed that off at the time.

Taking to Reddit, the grieving mom recalled how Emily approached her at the funeral to hug her and tell her she was sorry for her loss. It was at this point that she realized something was different.

She wrote: “I noticed that she was holding her hand under her stomach and that her stomach had gotten a little bigger since I last saw her.

“She saw me looking at my stomach, so she said, ‘Surprise! I’m pregnant!’ I didn’t know what to make of that, so I just stared at her blankly for a second before moving on.”

The poster known by the username u/BumblebeeWooden8319She says she couldn’t stop crying throughout the funeral for fear of seeing photos of her daughter for fear of looking anywhere but her lap.

After finally managing to calm down a bit, she saw Emily walking towards her and naturally assumed that she was about to say a few words of comfort. Unfortunately, this was not the case at all.

The poster continued: “Instead, she put her hand on her stomach and pushed it out a little. She said something along the lines of, ‘It breaks my heart to think that the same thing could happen to my little angel. Don’t imagine what you’re going through. Me and Anthony are so blessed to have had a healthy baby so far.” blah blah blah.

“I was shocked. I started by telling her that my baby didn’t die because it was unhealthy. It died from a disease we couldn’t control.

It took a few minutes to persuade Emily to leave, but in the end she did. The anonymous poster has since received a mix of supportive and angry messages from relatives, some of whom told her she had “overreacted”.

However, her Reddit colleagues assured her that she had every right to ask Emily to leave, as her cousin’s behavior was totally unacceptable.

One person commented: “Your cousin sounds awful, doesn’t invite you to any of her life events, you are no longer around and she finds it appropriate to show up for you on an awfully difficult day and bring pregnancy upon you and take advantage of your grief to make her feel good.

“Your family is terrible for berating you for what you need.”

Another said: “I am so sorry for your loss. Your cousin seems to be very narcissistic. The only thing she can think about is herself. She had no sympathy and basically used your child’s funeral to announce she’s pregnant.

“She tried to make the funeral about ‘her’ and her child. Shut down those who say you’re wrong or that you overreacted. You didn’t do it. She should have been there to support you. Since she didn’t do it, she had to go do it.”
