My Cultural Life: Joseph Young

Binaural sound artist Joseph Young divides his time between Brighton, Berlin and Dublin. He is currently Artist in Residence at Kilruddery House, County Wicklow, where he has created an immersive new soundtrack, The Ancestors.

BOOK: Colin Sterling

I’m in my final year of a hands-on PhD researching the Killruddery House archives at SMARTlab UCD, so I don’t really have much time to read for pleasure! Anyone who has a doctorate knows what I mean…

That being said, I’ve really enjoyed a lot of the articles I’ve found on Critical Heritage lately, especially those by Colin Sterling. Does this really make me bored?

TV: Better call Saul

Even if I don’t have much time to read for pleasure, I end the day with a good TV program. I enjoyed the new series of the Danish political thriller Borrow and the latest series of Better call Saul – which makes me very happy as I thought they were long overdue. You can’t beat a good Scandinavian thriller, while Saul is easily one of the best and funniest anti-heroes on TV.

You have to love too Two doors down, a Scottish sitcom about dysfunctional neighbours. So frightening it’s uncomfortable.

MUSIC: Bandcamp Bits

I buy quite a bit of independent music from Bandcamp, especially vinyl and cassettes, and I really love everything on the Touch label celebrating its 40th anniversary. Also headlined Dublin-based Farpoint Recordings, who recently released a fantastic fundraiser for Ukraine Artists for Peace (Spoiler alert: I contributed a track to the album).

My favorite podcast of all time is frame Presented by Irish-American Patrick McGinley, who lives in Estonia and hosts a weekly round-up of international fieldwork – 800+ episodes and counting.

EVENT: Berlin Biennale

I’m really looking forward to the Berlin Biennale this summer [until September 18]. I spend a lot of time in Berlin and it’s great to see so much interesting work in one capital.

As an artist, you are always looking for inspiration to both keep up with the latest developments in your field and to understand the cultural zeitgeist. My Cultural Life: Joseph Young
