My cultural life: Singer Brian Deady

Skibbereen soulman Brian Deady’s latest album The Healing was released last year. At Cork’s Culture Night on September 23rd, Deady will perform at the free Magic Nights by the Lee multimedia concert at Cork City Hall, as will John Spillane, Doireann Ní Ghríofa, Fish Go Deep and more.

BOOK: Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Pilgrimage Years

I’ve recently started reading Haruki Murakami again, I loved his books for the world he creates in them, his versions of Japan. He has one foot in everyday life and the other in the surreal.

This is about five friends who grow up together. He also always seems to have music somewhere in his books. I went to Japan a long time ago, so maybe it’s a way for me to revisit the place, but also a reminder that I need to go back.

TV: US Open

I recently watched the US Tennis Open – there were a lot of late nights to watch the games but it was worth every minute. The drama, the twists and turns of the plot, the psychological element of the game… I get a lot from that.

But also to see the new era of tennis dawn – 19-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz won the men’s tournament and I was so happy for him.

MUSIC: Outrun

I listened to video game music from the 1990s, specifically the game music OutRun – there is something special about this style, not only the nostalgic element, but also the music itself. As sterile and “computer-like” as it may sound, to me it has a soul. In this era of video game music, every note had to be programmed, so it relies on a lot of human input.

Other than that, it’s Steely Dan’s music. You calm me down.

CONCERT: Randy Newman

I look forward to seeing Randy Newman in Europe early next year. I don’t know where yet, but I will find a city. He’s an incredible singer/songwriter/storyteller, sort of like your favorite history teacher…a unique combination, but overall it’s his humanity that really speaks to me.

I visited him in Dublin a few years ago and it’s like visiting an old friend. He is a rare breed – perhaps the last of his kind. My cultural life: Singer Brian Deady
