When it comes to planning who to invite to your wedding, the choice is entirely between you and your partner – and you shouldn’t be forced to invite anyone you don’t want.
But for a bride, denying someone entry to her wedding means she has to start funding the ceremony herself, as her father has decided to get support based on her decision.
In a post on Reddit, the 58-year-old father explained that he paid for his daughter’s wedding in installments but recently discovered his wife wasn’t invited to the special day.
And after trying to convince his 27-year-old daughter to reconsider, she told him the wedding was only for the “right family” – although her mother’s boyfriend was invited.

in the his posthe said: “My daughter is getting married in the fall. I’m supposed to pay for the wedding, we agreed that needs to be approved so no money has been paid yet.
“My wife is not invited to the wedding. I’m divorced [from my daughter’s mum] 15 years and married to my wife for 8 years. My daughter never really liked my wife, they didn’t get along well. My other two children love them.
“I called my daughter and asked her why my wife wasn’t invited. She said it’s her wedding anniversary and she just wants to invite her real family. I said, ‘Well, did you invite your mother’s friend?’ and she said yes.
“I said, ‘Okay, then you should invite my wife too, or I won’t pay for the wedding’.
“She declined and said she wouldn’t invite my wife. I told her that I would then cancel the payments and she didn’t believe me. I canceled it and now my daughter is super mad at me being my ex-wife.”
The father later clarified that his wife is 61 years old and that he met her five years after his divorce from his daughter’s mother.
He added: “My wife is 61, I met her five years after my divorce. My daughter and my wife never got along, she sided with her mother during the divorce and our relationship has rocked ever since.”
Commenters on the Reddit post were divided on the issue, as many could see that while the man can be unhappy with his daughter’s decision and revoke the funding if he chooses, he can also invite or uninvite whoever she pleases .
One person said: “It’s your money and you can spend it however you like. Your daughter can choose who she wants at her wedding and you can choose not to pay for it.”
While another added: “She has every right to choose who is at her wedding but you have every right to choose to support your wife in that.” Especially if she doesn’t like you just because you married after her mother.”
And a third wrote: “You are under no obligation to invite your wife and you are under no obligation to pay or attend without your wife.”
