My first job was so stressful that I couldn’t sleep at night

CALL BACK: I found my first job a veritable failure and it was very stressful.
It took months to land a job in my chosen field after graduation, and I was excited to start my career.

I am a 22 year old woman and the first in my family to go to college.
But my job is not what I imagined. My contract stipulates that I have to work from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., but I stay there until at least 6:30 p.m. every day.
My workload is so much that I fall behind a lot. Sometimes I have to be alone in an empty office until everything is done.

All issues receive a personal response, usually within 24 hours on weekdays.
Most people in the company work overtime for free, but no one complains.
Yesterday I burst into tears because I felt I couldn’t cope.
DEIDRE SAYS: Starting a job can be a culture shock. Maybe you need to accept that you will be there until 6:30, just like everyone else.
However, if you can’t get things done and stay up late, maybe you should discuss your workload with your boss.
