You are forgiven for thinking that the ovaries are connected to the fallopian tubes (as the diagrams show).

The spherical glands release one every monthwhich travels through the tubes toward the uterus.

But contrary to popular belief, the ovaries are actually not connected to the fallopian tubes at all.

Many women are first finding out on TikTok that the ovary projects an egg into the body instead of just going straight into the tube.

Finger-like structures called fimbriae that extend out of the fallopian tube sweep the egg inside.

The egg then enters the uterus and, if fertilized, attaches to the wall and pregnancy begins.

TikTok user @ring.swald.egan was the first to talk about it, asking in a video: “Do you want to feel stressed?

“Did you know that your ovaries are not connected to your fallopian tubes at all?

“The only thing they’re connected to is a ligament that connects them to your gut.

“They’re not connected to your uterus or your fallopian tubes — they don’t touch.”

reaction to the video, @dr.chelseaa resident pediatrician from the US shared her friend’s reaction to this surprising fact.

She said: “That was after college, I was in med school, I was talking about how your egg has to go out of the cannon and no wonder it hurts.

“We were at dinner and she looks straight at me and says, ‘What do you mean?’

“And I said it’s because the ovary has to shoot the egg out and the little fimbriae at the end of the fallopian tubes have to pick it up and hopefully get it into the uterus.

“She stared at me wide-eyed in silence for a solid minute and said, ‘Isn’t that a closed system?’

“She was distressed about this knowledge for days.”

Comments on the video indicated that many women were just as stunned by the information.

One said: “Here I was laughing at guys for not understanding their periods and I didn’t even know my ovaries and fallopian tubes are neighbors and not roommates [sic].”

Another said: “So you’re saying the female reproductive system is a big game of catch, how are we still there as a species?”

Someone pointed out that the egg has to burst through the superficial ovary every time – there is no opening that leaves it seamlessly.
