A woman has told how her sister said she “may not be able to participate” in a heartbreaking final Facebook before she died of Covid.
Rachel Hobbs said her older sister, Karen, 40, tested positive for the bug in December 2020, despite following tight restrictions and rarely leaving the house.
The “fit and healthy” mother of five was then taken to hospital on December 27, where her condition worsened, Wales online report.
Less than a week later, the former EasyJet flight attendant updated her friends to let them know she was in a coma, telling them she was “deeply terrified”.
And unbeknownst to friends and family, it was the last update she ever gave out.
Karen’s post reads: “Being placed in a [induced] comatose and warned that I might not make it through.
“Please everyone pray for me that I will wake up from this and go home to my children.
“Terror is not a word!”
The loving mother remained in a coma until her tragic death on January 19, following cardiac arrest.
But with tight restrictions in place, her heartbroken family was unable to say goodbye.
Karen’s sister Rachel, from Cardiff, Wales, said: “We couldn’t believe it.
“We saw her while she was in a coma, but we didn’t say goodbye, because I didn’t really think that would be the last time we saw her.
“Earlier, the doctors said she could die, but even then, we thought she would be fine, even if it took a long time for her to get well.”
The news that Karen was in a coma shocked her family, who did not receive a call from the hospital to update them on the decision.
And Rachel, Karen’s five children and their father Pete were unable to say anything to Karen before she was seduced.
We met her while she was in a coma, but we didn’t say goodbye, because I didn’t really think that would be the last time we saw her.
On January 12, they were called to the hospital, where a consultant gave them terrible news.
Rachel said they were told she had multiple organ failure and that they should prepare for the worst.
And on the evening of January 19, Rachel received a call to her horror, telling her that her sister had passed away.
Lockdown limits mean they can’t see Karen again, while limits have also been put in place on the number of people who attended her funeral.
Rachel said her sister “absolutely adores” her five children, Dylan, Niamh, Amelia, Sam and Olivia, children she has with ex-partner Pete.
The oldest, Dylan, was 14 years old when she died, while the youngest, Olivia, was only four years old.
Rachel added: “They’ve coped so well in the situations. She would be so proud of them.”
