A pair of mysterious glass spheres have been discovered on the lunar surface by the Chinese lunar rover.
The semi-transparent spheres measure up to 4 cm across and were captured by the Yutu-2’s panoramic camera.
Strange objects lie on the far side of the Moon, which Yutu-2 has discovered since 2019, according to a study published Tuesday.
Unfortunately, a robot the size of a washing machine was unable to analyze the chemical composition of the “spherules”.
They have been considered targets for further study because they could help shed light on the early history of the Moon.
Small glass spheres are a relatively common sight on the moon, although they are usually less than 3 mm in diameter.
They are created when silicate materials are subjected to very high temperatures – both of which are readily available on the moon.
Usually, the orbs are leftovers from the Moon’s volcanic activity or created by meteorite impacts.
The extreme heat generated by the latter is most likely the cause of the balls that Yutu-2 found.
“The transparent and translucent glass on the Moon is less than 1 mm in diameter, while the larger glass is dark and opaque,” the researchers wrote.
“Recently formed or exposed spheroids as evidenced by their intact shapes and exposed surfaces.”
Further study of the spheres could uncover new information about the composition of the Moon’s mantle and impact events.
The study was published in the journal Science Bulletin.
Yutu 2 has come a kilometer long since landing on the far side of the Moon at the beginning of 2019.
It celebrates the three-year anniversary of the rocky satellite’s remote discovery – the first explorer to do so in history – on January 11.
This is not the first curious discovery that Yutu-2 has made.
In December, China’s space agency shared an image about a “mystery house” photographed by the rover on the far side of the lunar surface.
The cubic object protrudes from the lunar horizon near the Von Kármán crater in the Antarctic-Aitken Basin.
Scientists can’t agree on what it is, while online conspiracy theorists are adamant that it’s an alien-built structure.
It took several weeks for the Yutu-2 to get close to the subject and capture a better image. Experts eventually concluded it was an oddly shaped rock.
