Mysterious new substance discovered deep in the Earth’s core confuses scientists

Scientists claim that the core of EARTH is neither a solid nor a liquid, as we have long believed, but something “quite unusual”.

In fact, they believe it’s an odd mix of elements that make up a bit of the two.

Not liquid and not solid

Or as the experts called it, an “ultrasonic state”.

Deep inside is a combination of “lighter” elements, along with superheated solid and liquid states.

They are composed of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon molecules, circling in a lattice-like lattice of iron.

“It’s quite unusual,” said Professor He Yu, who led the study.

“The solidification of iron at the inner core boundary does not change the mobility of these light particles, and the convection of the light particles is continuous in the inner core.”

The temperature is said to be above 5,500 degrees Celsius, approximately the scorching heat you might expect on the surface of the Sun.

Scientists cannot directly study the Earth’s core to make their findings.

So they cleverly turned to earthquake data instead.

But discovery leaves more questions than answers.

Many curious minds are now wondering why is it like this?

Best of all, it can help us understand the Earth’s magnetic field.

“I think more research is needed to explain other seismic features, such as seismic anisotropy, in the inner core,” added Professor Yu.

The study was published in the journal Nature.
