An investigation has been launched after 130 cats were found dead in a freezer in Canada.

The grim discovery was made in a trailer in Vanderhoof, British Columbia, and has sparked an investigation by the BC Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Eileen Drever, who has worked for the SPCA for more than three decades, said this was one of the worst cases she’s seen.

“We have of course encountered deceased animals in the past, but never on this scale,” she told CBC.

Less than a week after the find, animal control officers searched another trailer owner of the same person at Fort St. James, about 40 miles from Vanderhoof. They found another 120 cats and three Chihuahuas living in “unsafe and dirty” conditions.

“The entryway and hallway to the bedrooms were covered in layers of feces and the entire trailer was very hot and filled with an overpowering smell of ammonia from urine buildup,” Drever said in a statement released on the SPCA website. “Faces and urine were so viscous that boot covers were pulled off in a few steps due to the stickiness.”

Drever added that the animals are being deprived of basic nutrition.

“There was no water for any of the animals,” she said. “There was some dry cat food spilled on the floor, but the food was contaminated with urine and feces.”

She added, “Many of the cats seemed very hungry and came up to our officer the first time we entered and immediately started eating the food that was offered.” She notes that many of the cats were having trouble breathing.”

The SPCA said the three Chihuahuas confiscated are being treated for “dental disease, hair loss and grooming issues.”

“Anytime we deal with animal hoarding, it’s devastating for both the animals and the people,” Drever said. “We’re just so glad we were called in time to rescue the remaining animals.”

The rescued cats and dogs are now being cared for at SPCA shelters and continue to receive ongoing veterinary care.
