Nadine Dorries says BBC funding model is ‘completely outdated’

Nadine Dorries says the Government will look at ways media watchdog Ofcom can “hold the BBC accountable” and introduce new ways of funding the channel.
The culture secretary said the company’s funding model was “completely outdated” and decisions on changes would be made “well ahead” of the BBC charter renewal in 2027.
It comes as the company holds talks about how to fund its services as the license fee faces an uncertain future.
BBC director-general Tim Davie said he would rather produce less content than compromise on quality when considering cutting funding for the channel.
Speaking to The Spectator, Ms Dorries said: “We will announce very soon that we will be looking very seriously at how we fund the BBC.
“We are ready to implement a new way of funding the BBC.
“We will look at Ofcom holding the BBC accountable and then very shortly afterwards we will announce other measures that we will put in place to start looking at how the BBC will be funded in the future that we are in time for this to do this for the renewal of the charter.”
The government on Thursday released a white paper aimed at implementing broadcasting reforms to “create a new golden age of British television and help the country’s public service broadcasters thrive”.
The document gave no further details on the BBC’s funding reforms.
