Nancy Pelosi lands in Shannon to speak to US Ambassador about NI protocol

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, landed at Shannon Airport today for a meeting with US Ambassador to Ireland Claire Cronin.

s Pelosi landed in Ireland a day after leading a congressional visit to Armenia amid rising tensions and military clashes with Azerbaijan last week.

Ms Pelosi was greeted by Ambassador Cronin at Shannon Airport before the two held a meeting where they discussed “the importance of a negotiated settlement of the Northern Ireland Protocol by Britain and the EU,” Ambassador Cronin said on Twitter.

“A resolution would be a long-term net gain for the region’s economy and political stability — for all of its communities,” Ms. Cronin said.

In May this year, spokeswoman Pelosi issued a statement reaffirming the US government’s support for the protocol and saying it was “deeply concerning” that the UK wanted to “unilaterally discard” it.

President Biden also stressed the importance of finding a diplomatic solution to the standoff in Prime Minister Liz Truss’ first call two weeks ago.

In her statement earlier this year, Ms Pelosi said it was “absolutely necessary” to ensure that “there is no physical border between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland”.

Ms Pelosi also described the Good Friday Agreement (GFA) as a bedrock of peace and “a beacon of hope for the entire world.”

The future of US-UK trade deals “cannot be guaranteed” if the UK “decides to undermine the RIA”.

“Negotiated agreements such as the Protocol preserve the important progress and stability created by the Good Friday Accords, which continue to enjoy strong bipartisan, bicameral support in the United States Congress.

“As I have said in my discussions with the Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary and Members of the House of Commons, if the UK chooses to undermine the Good Friday Agreements, Congress cannot and will not support a bilateral free trade agreement with the UK,” said Ms. Pelosi in her statement.

The US spokeswoman was in Armenia this week, where she condemned Azerbaijani attacks on towns far beyond the neighbors’ disputed border.

“I gave a speech in Yerevan at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts to make it clear that America stands with Armenia. In the ongoing fight against autocracy around the world, we will always support democracy and freedom.

“In this difficult time we must have hope. We can find hope in Armenia’s history of resilience and strength,” Ms. Pelosi said. Nancy Pelosi lands in Shannon to speak to US Ambassador about NI protocol
