Nancy Pelosi visits Kyiv as Russia ramps up attack in eastern Ukraine

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv today, the latest show of support from a senior Western politician for Ukraine’s fight against Russia.

It came as Russia demolished a runway at the main airport in the southwestern city of Odessa on Saturday, Ukrainian officials said.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said today its missiles destroyed a runway and a foreign weapons hangar at a military airfield near Odessa.

Ukraine said Russian planes continued to launch attacks on the southeastern city of Mariupol, focusing on the Azovstal steel plant, where troops and civilians are taking refuge.

A Ukrainian militant at the steel mill said Saturday that 20 women and children managed to leave the plant.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 46 civilians left the residential area around the plant on Saturday.

Reuters could not immediately verify reports of battlefield developments.

Ms Pelosi said she met Mr Zelenskyy in Kyiv to convey the message that the United States stands firm with Ukraine as it fights “Putin’s diabolical invasion”.

Britain’s Foreign Office said Russia is using a troll factory to spread disinformation about the war on social media and target politicians in a number of countries, including the UK and South Africa.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed criticism that Germany was showing no leadership in Western efforts to supply Ukraine with heavy weapons, saying he would rather be cautious than rash. Nancy Pelosi visits Kyiv as Russia ramps up attack in eastern Ukraine
