National Crime Agency officer describes secretly filming Christopher Kinahan Sr ‘up close’

An officer at the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has recalled a time when he “came up close and personal” with Christopher Kinahan Sr. and secretly filmed him.

CA Officer Craig Taylor (not his real name) has been tracking the Kinahan Cartel since 2006 and has revealed the challenges and dangers of getting close to the oldest member of the criminal gang.

“Most of the missions had different levels of butt twitching. Still, I managed to get close to the captain [Christopher Kinahan Sr], who luckily ignored me because I was filming. But I was pretty nervous,” he told The Observer.

Taylor stated that Kinahan did not appear to have noticed the plainclothes NCA officer standing next to him and as a result he obtained new information to dismantle the Kinahan cartel.

However, for security reasons, Taylor was unable to share any further details of the encounter.

He said there had been incidents where police investigating the group had been put at risk.

“Colleagues have been approached by some very, very undesirables, some accompanied by convicted gunmen, others with ties to political groups… and have been challenged. It’s very intimidating. These people say, ‘We know who you are.’

“It’s not a good place, it’s very uncomfortable, but we work under the risk of compromise. There were compromises among the Kinahans. It didn’t compromise the investigation, but it did compromise it [the officers] as an individual, which put her in a very difficult position at the time.”

An NCA official recalled one occasion when a colleague had to be rescued: “During an investigation on the outskirts of the Kinahans, they were chased down the road with a knife. Another was followed in a car.”

Last week, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control issued a press release detailing the sanctions against Christopher Snr and his sons Daniel and Christopher Jnr, and other members of the “Kinahan Organized Crime Group (KOCG)” for their criminal activities .”

A US government official quoted in the press release noted that KOCG smuggles drugs into Europe, launders money and commits murders as part of its criminal enterprise.

Matt Horne, deputy investigator at the NCA, described the Kinahans as a “high threat, high harm” organization that plays a significant role in the shipment of drugs to Europe.

He said the KOCG’s hierarchy had convinced senior Kinahan members that they were “untouchable.”

“You won’t catch them running out of a car with five kilos of cocaine, that’s for sure. They are far from that level of crime: the cartel structure is extremely hierarchical,” said an NCA investigator.

“The main difference is the high level of violence they use. That really sets them apart, along with the efforts they make to ensure vendettas are pulled through,” added an NCA official. National Crime Agency officer describes secretly filming Christopher Kinahan Sr ‘up close’
