National Film Day has been a success but Labor Day box office is still very dismal

Worse news, director George Miller’s latest film “Three Thousand Years of Longing” flopped, dropping to number 13 on the chart with just $1.5 million in its second weekend. The film grossed $7 million less worldwide against its $60 million budget. “Three Thousand Years Of Longing hasn’t even hit the big screen yet, but theaters are so hungry for new films that United Artists was able to expand the release.

The only other new release this weekend is “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul”. debuted at number 14 with just $1.4 million. With somewhat limited appeal, lackluster marketing, and simultaneous online release on Peacock, it’s hard to expect more. In other news, “Jurassic World Dominion” only grossed $455,000 domestically but is now just over $5 million more to cross the $1 billion mark globally. It may limp across the finish line, but it will get there.

Last week’s winner “The Invitation” held firm, coming in at number five and taking home $4.7 million, down just over 30%. With $18.2 million worldwide, it’s far from a hit, but on a small $10 million budget, it can get there. In sixth place is the movie “Idris Elba fights a big lion,” aka “Beast,” which added $3.6 million in its third weekend. At $46.4 million worldwide, there’s still a long way to go to justify that $36 million budget. It’s also a real shame because, for my money, this one is a blast and worth the admission.

The rest of the top 10 was filled but “Minions: The Rise of Gru” was at number eight with $3.1 million and “Thor: Love and Thunder” with $2.4 million. This will likely be its last weekend in the top 10 as the newest adventure of the Marvel Cinematic Universe launches on Disney+ Thursday for Disney+ Day.
