NATO transporters with weapons in Ukraine are a “target”, warns Russia

Russia has said its latest threat against Kiev allies could target NATO transporters with weapons in Ukraine.

Ergei Shoigu, Russia’s defense minister, warned of this on Wednesday, according to the state news agency RIA.

His comments come a week after Kremlin Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the West of risking World War III over its support for Ukraine.

Although NATO has made it clear that it will not send troops to Ukraine, the alliance continues to send heavy weapons to repel the Russian invasion.

Last week, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed that the security organization Kyiv had pledged and provided at least $8 billion (£6.4 billion) in military aid.

This was followed by US President Joe Biden’s proposal to give Ukraine an additional $20 billion (£16 billion) in military support from Washington.

The desire to supply more arms to Ukraine was also echoed by British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. “For too long there has been an incorrect distinction between defensive and offensive weapons. It became an excuse for some to drag their feet. That time is now over,” she said on April 26.

Elsewhere, the Bundestag approved the shipment of anti-aircraft tanks to Ukraine.

In addition to threatening Nato supplies, the Kremlin has also targeted Ukrainian train stations in a bid to halt shipments of Western-made weapons to the eastern Donbass region, where the heaviest fighting is currently taking place.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Wednesday it had successfully shut down six train stations, without giving further details. It added that it hit 40 Ukrainian military sites, including ammunition depots.

Moscow also launched fresh attacks in western Ukraine on Tuesday, with Lviv’s mayor saying Russian missiles hit power and water networks in the city. NATO transporters with weapons in Ukraine are a “target”, warns Russia
