Naughty Dog’s lead character designer has been called “delusional” for wanting to work in games

IN a Twitter thread of artists talking about times they were told they’d never make it, a Naughty Dog developer opened up about his time at school.

Del Walker, who has been creating characters in games for 11 years, previously worked for Rocksteady and Respawn.

He has designed 3D characters for big games like Batman Arkham, Apex Legends and the upcoming Jedi Survivor.

Although he’s now a senior character designer at one of America’s biggest studios, not everyone seems to have believed in him all the time.

Walker studied Game Art Design in the UK, eventually graduating with a third form degree.

This is one of the lowest grades you can get at university level, just above failing.

Walker claims he was told at university that he “had delusions about making 3D characters for games,” suggesting they didn’t think he would make it in the industry.

Of course, he has since proved them wrong and has become incredibly successful in this very field.

Walker also claims that his course did not help him improve his skills and instead compared his work to other students.

He says that students who did well in class “ignored the faculty all year long” and were often self-taught from “YouTube tutorials.”

Walker went to university many years ago, and ever since it has become easier and easier to learn new skills over the internet.

With the proliferation of social media platforms, experts often share their skills in tutorials with their TikTok and YouTube followers.

We are seeing more and more self-taught writers, singers and artists popping up in every industry with no formal qualifications required.

Beginning in 2023, the way students pay off their student loans is changing, meaning many are reconsidering their decision to pursue college education.

The changes to the repayment system mean that the majority of newer students will pay back more on their student loans.

In addition, they have to pay off loans for 40 years, significantly longer than the previous repayment cap.
