Navy’s advanced stealth warship USS Zumwalt sails the Pacific amid rising tensions with China

The US Navy’s most advanced stealth surface warship is now in the western Pacific, paving the way for the possible deployment of US hypersonic missiles in the region. The move, assigned to the Navy’s largest destroyer squadron outside the country, is expected to draw Beijing’s attention as it comes at a time when tensions are simmering in the region.

The USS Zumwalt — the first in a class of three US Navy multi-role guided-missile destroyers — made a call at Guam and arrived in Japan on Monday, according to a report by CNN.

The Zumwalt-class destroyer is a class of three US Navy guided-missile destroyers designed for naval gun support, surface and anti-aircraft warfare.

According to the report, the warship was assigned to Destroyer Squadron 15 – the Navy’s largest destroyer squadron outside the US – which operates from the Yokosuka Naval Base near Tokyo.

The USS Zumwalt is “the largest and most technologically advanced surface combatant in the world,” and at 185 meters long, taller than any Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, according to the CNN report.

The Pentagon also intends to upgrade the warship in the future by adding the latest Common Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HCB) weapon system. The weapon system fires rockets at hypersonic speeds through the use of a booster rocket motor and is capable of destroying targets based on its speed alone, the report added, citing a memo released by the US Navy.

Compared to the USS Zumwalt, the Chinese Navy has Type 055 guided-missile cruisers, second only to the Zumwalt-class stealth ship.

With a displacement of 15,995 tons, Zumwalt is considered the largest destroyer in the world, compared to China’s Type 055, which is slightly lighter at 12,000 to 13,000 tons. While the USS Zumwalt is equipped with 80 vertical missile launch cells capable of hitting land and sea targets as well as anti-submarine missiles, the Type 055 has 112 launch cells capable of performing the same tasks.

In April, the PLA Navy released footage of a test launch of a hypersonic ballistic missile fired from its 055-class destroyer. Compared to the US Navy, which has only three warships in the Zumwalt class, the PLA Navy has six Type 055s in active service and more are expected soon as Beijing seeks to expand the class to a fleet of 16 ships Allow PLA naval fleet to overtake US and become the largest in the world.
