If you haven’t seen “Sex Education”, give it a go – it’s very entertaining. It’s a show that takes an honest and harsh look at the raging hormones and awkward initial sexual encounters faced by a group of high school students. The main character, played by Asa Butterfield, struggles with all this as a shy child and also the son of a flashy sex therapist, played by the great Gillian Anderson.
While the sexy content may be the attraction, the reason to keep watching is the delicate, authentic work of the characters and seeing these strange personalities come together in unexpected ways. It’s a very human story and one that tends to get buried between the constant stream of documentaries and reality shows about serial killers. Gatwa is a key part of the chemistry that keeps this show going, so the good news is that being the newest Time Lord won’t stop him from returning to the character.
It should be noted that Gatwa’s time as “Doctor Who” is beginning with a script by Russell T. Davies, the man responsible for the 2003 “Who” reboot that kicked off a whole new generation of Whovians. It’s an exciting time for that particular fandom and for us geeks who are even more excited to see him return with a proper Netflix series.
