Almost 40,000 ‘zombie’ cars were imported into Ireland from the UK, according to a cross-border analysis of end-of-life cars and undocumented depreciation.
The Vehicle History Review Service found that 39,336 affected vehicles had been imported into the country.
Zombie vehicles are described as having been brought back to life but not correctly identified as insurance write-offs or ex-junk.
From today’s perspective, the total market value of those affected is over 318 million euros, according to MotorCheck.ie. Examples of zombie cars were currently for sale privately and in the forecourts of dealerships with “all clear” stories.
The MotorCheck co-founder said it’s crucial that buyers are made aware of a vehicle’s history before making a purchase.
Shane Teskey said: “To date we know that almost 40,000 zombie cars have been imported into the Republic of Ireland – those that have been brought back to life but not necessarily identified as insurance write-offs or ex-junk.
“This equates to €318 million, leaving dealers or their owners footing the bill if the true story of the car is discovered. With used car prices soaring by up to 50 per cent in Ireland, it is more important than ever that car dealers and private buyers are made aware of a vehicle’s hidden history before paying well in excess of fair market value for a potentially dangerous ex-depreciation.
The research, which airs Tuesday on RTÉ prime timeposes a potentially serious security risk and financial liability.
The car history check company warned motorists of the problem and risks involved in buying a used car.
Despite the introduction of new Brexit-related import duties, the number of vehicles imported into Ireland from the UK remains high.
Over 83,000 vehicles were imported in 2021, with a total of 457,000 crossing the water over the past four years. The company has checked the VIN numbers of 1.9 million Irish vehicles against its UK accident database.
