Neighbors reportedly heard screams coming from a room before a student was found dead in a university classroom.

The 19-year-old woman was killed at Arbor House, student accommodation in Clerkenwell, central London, police have confirmed.

Students were seen leaving the dormitories after the horrific incident as police launched a murder investigation.

Some said they were woken up by the sound of police “knocking on the door” and were now frightened.

Sky News reported that people heard screams coming from the room before the incident.

Officers were called to the scene around 5.10am on Saturday for reports of a seriously injured woman.

Police and paramedics were present but the woman was pronounced dead.

A student who was laying a bouquet of flowers was awakened by a police knock.

He didn’t know the woman, but told it MyLondon: “ I woke up to the cops knocking on my door. I went into a group chat and everyone had a knock too.

“We will likely call for further security measures. I hope it’s the first and last time something like this happens.”

Another student living at Arbor House, Anna, 20, from Romania, said: “I feel really uncomfortable. She was pretty old my age.

“The police were on my floor banging on doors. It was scary.”

The Metropolitan Police have opened a murder investigation but no arrests have been made and inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.

Speaking to reporters from Islington Police Station, Chief Inspector Adam Instone said: “The Metropolitan Police today opened a murder investigation into the tragic death of a young woman in Clerkenwell.

“Police officers were called to the Arbor House on Sebastian Street around 5.10am on Saturday morning.

“Despite the best efforts of police officers and fellow ambulance workers, it is very sad that a 19-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We are working to ensure that the woman’s family have been informed of this tragic news and that they have the support of the Met during the unimaginably difficult days and months that lie ahead.

“Arbor House is student accommodation and I know there will be great sadness and deep concern among the local people and student community.

“I share that sadness and concern and can assure you that a thorough murder investigation is underway, led by qualified and experienced detectives who will work tirelessly to identify and arrest those responsible.

“Tackling violent crime is a top priority for the Met.

“Police officers, including forensic specialists, remain on site. Local residents will also see additional police in the area.

Arbor House is run by Unite Students who provide purpose built student accommodation across the UK.

A spokesman for the City, University of London said: “As this is an ongoing police incident we are unable to comment on their investigation.

“As a university we will do everything we can to support our students and staff and we will continue to give our full support to the police in their investigation.

“We work closely with Unite Students who own and operate Arbor House.”

A spokesman for Unite Students added: “Our priority right now is the safety and welfare of the students at the Arbor House.”
