Neil Gaiman reveals he’s spent the last 30 years stopping Sandman’s adaptation

Writer Neil Gaiman said he’s spent the past 30 years thwarting interpretations of The Sandman, but feels the upcoming series is “an adaptation of their dreams.”

A new dark fantasy drama series based on Gaiman’s beloved award-winning DC comic and will air on Netflix from August 5.

It will follow the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he corrects the mistakes he has made throughout his vast existence.

Gaiman told PA news agency on the red carpet of the series’ UK premiere: “I’ve spent most of the last 30 years stopping Sandman adaptations and hoping that they don’t.

“So all of a sudden, here we’re actually doing an adaptation of Sandman and it’s an adaptation of our dreams.

“We had the money to make it, we had to put together the cast of our dreams, and the point was not to mess it up and I really don’t think we messed it up. .

“I’m really proud of what we’ve done so it’s amazing.”

The writer added that one thing that fans will be familiar with but which newcomers may find “very strange” is that no episode is the same.

He explains: “Some of them will be really dark, some of them will be warm and human and inspiring.

“Some of them are you will go to Hell, and you will attend a serial killer convention but you will also meet in a small London pub every 100 years from 1389 onwards, watch Sandman Morpheus meet a friend in a pub, and it won’t be the same but it will always take you places you’ve never been before. “
