Netflix agrees to let viewership be measured externally by Barb

Netflix is registered with TV ratings agency Barb (Broadcast Audience Research Board), which means their audience will now be measured externally.

In November, viewing figures for the streaming giant will be reported by the organization, which aggregates audience reviews and TV ratings in the UK.

The move makes Barb the world’s first industry-owned audience currency that Netflix has entered.

Streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have previously released only snapshots of their viewing data, often highlighting the successes of their larger shows.

Barb will report Netflix ratings the same way it reports viewing of more than 300 other subscription TV channels, from mainstream services like BBC and ITV to smaller channels like Dave.

It comes as Netflix is said to be getting ready to launch an ad-supported tier of its streaming platform.

Netflix co-CEO, Reed Hastings (Netflix/PA)

Its co-CEO Reed Hastings said: “Back in 2019, at the RTS conference in Cambridge, I welcomed the idea of Netflix audiences being measured independently.

“We’ve kept in touch with Barb since then and are delighted to deliver on its commitment to reliably measure how people watch TV in the UK.”

Justin Sampson, chief executive of Barb, said: “Our audience measurement is constantly adjusting to the new platforms and devices that people are using to watch TV shows. their favorite.

“We took a big step last year when we started reporting audiences using streaming services.

“Netflix’s commitment to Barb sends a clear signal that what we’re doing is valuable to new and established players in the market.”
