Netflix will start charging you an “additional monthly fee” for account sharing starting in early 2023

NETFLIX has promised to crack down on account sharing by “early 2023.”

That means anyone who shares their Netflix logins outside of their household will be charged an additional monthly fee.

Netflix has been warning about the move for months, but is finally revealing more details about the big change.

It will still be possible to have Netflix on multiple screens in your home.

However, if you pass your login on to people in other households, you have to pay an additional fee.

It’s unclear what the fee will be, and there’s no exact start date yet.

Netflix previously estimated that up to 100 million homes shared subscriptions — just under half of its total membership base.

Cheap as chips

It comes just days after Netflix unveiled its cheap new ad-supported subscription plan.

Last week, the streaming giant announced that the new Basic With Ads tier would cost just $6.99 / £4.99 per month.

That’s in contrast to the Netflix Basic pricing, which sits at $9.99 / £6.99.

It is scheduled to go live on November 3 and will show between 15 and 30 seconds of advertising before and during series and films.

The new Basic With Ads tier is rolling out in 12 countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, the UK and the US.

“Basic with Adverts is everything people love about Netflix, at a lower price, with a few ads in between,” said Netflix’s Greg Peters.

The new plan, which Netflix first teased in April, offers most of the features of its basic plan, but with a few minor differences.

Customers can stream in HD resolution (720p) on up to one device at a time. Basic also upgrades to 720p resolution.

An average of four to five minutes of video advertising is played every hour.

Netflix said it will avoid playing the same ad too many times.

A handful of movies and TV series aren’t available on the new plan due to licensing restrictions.

There will also be no option to download movies and series with Basic with in-app ads.

Clean up your plot

Netflix also provides a way out for account “piggybackers” who share logins.

You can now remove your profile from the account you shared.

Users can migrate their profile to another account with all their recommendations and favorites.

Netflix is positioning profile transfer as something needed when people move out or when you break up.

“No matter what, let your Netflix profile be a constant in a life of change so you can sit back, relax, and pick up exactly where you left off,” said Timi Kosztin, product manager on Netflix’s product innovation team.

The feature rolled out this week.
