Ireland head coach Greg McWilliams praised Neve Jones’ player of the match after she guided her side to a last-minute Six Nations win over Scotland in Belfast on Saturday night.

Ones was superb, leading from the front in a typically aggressive display that was packed with hard hitting.

The hooker’s first-half try set Ireland up for a late 15-14 win thanks to a converted try from Enya Breen with the clock in the red.

Jones excelled throughout the tournament and McWilliams was full of praise for the Ulster woman who is fast becoming a real leader in this Irish team.

“Neve Jones is one of the most extraordinary players I’ve ever coached, male or female,” said McWilliams.

“I can’t explain what she’s like. She jumps in and she smiles, she’s happy. I can’t explain that she dances on TikTok, she’s always joking, always making jokes and then suddenly we turn it on and she becomes like a different person.

“She’s incredible and embodies the people we want to represent this country.

“And she’s getting better all the time, she’s had a chance to really grow and develop now. She’s only 23 years old, we have very young players who are getting better and better.

“People like Sam (Monaghan), we know she’s obviously very important, Edel McMahon was outstanding again and then of course Vicky (Irwin) did great. Kathryn Dane did great, another Ulster player who did fantastic. I think that’s a good thing, just giving them the opportunity to play here.”

While McWilliams was proud of the character his team displayed, he admitted it was far from perfect.

Ireland’s line-up struggled again, conceding far too many sloppy penalties and unintentional errors in the difficult weather conditions at the Kingspan Stadium.

“To be honest I was disappointed today,” added McWilliams.

“It’s funny now because I’m split in my feelings. Of course I’m happy for my players, it was really important for the momentum and the work they’ve done, you can see their commitment to the jersey and the cause. But we have a lot to do.

“We are an ambitious team and we need to get better. The thought of going on our very first summer tour now is great. Two tests but I’m also looking forward to the summer to get to work, we need to get better at rugby fundamentals, we need to get better at the kicking game and those are the things I’m thinking of from now on .

“It’s funny. Part of me is excited, I’m so happy for the girls, but the other part of me thinks there’s a lot we can do to make ourselves a better team and it starts Tuesday morning , when we put together a plan.
