Neville Staple quotes tribute to The Specials bandmate Terry Hall

Neville Staple led tributes to his The Specials bandmate Terry Hall following Hall’s death at age 63.

His singer-songwriter rose to fame as part of a band, UK ska pioneers.

Hall’s death was announced via the band’s official Twitter account on Monday.

“This has hit me hard,” Staple wrote on Twitter, adding: “We knew Terry was unwell but didn’t realize how serious it was until recently. We’ve only recently confirmed some joint 2023 music deals with each other.

“In the music world, people have their ups and downs, but I will keep the great memories of me and Terry, making history together with the trio of The Specials and Fun Boy. Rest in peace, Terry Hall.”

Jane Wiedlin, guitarist and co-founder of The Go-Go’s, who co-wrote the band’s breakout hit Our Lips Are Sealed with Hall, joined Staple in mourning his death.

She wrote on Twitter: “So sad to hear that #terryhall has passed away. He is a lovely, sensitive, talented and unique person.

“Our incredibly brief romance led to the song Our Lips Are Sealed, a song that will forever tie us together in music history. Terrible news to hear this.

Wiedlin’s bandmate and Heaven Is A Place On Earth singer Belinda Carlisle said The Go-Go’s and Hall are “forever linked in music history”.

Punk and folk singer Frank Turner wrote on Twitter that The Specials were one of the “most important” characters of his childhood.

“Damn it. Just heard the news about Terry Hall. It was an absolute sadness,” he said.

Folk singer Billy Bragg pays tribute to Hall’s cultural impact on England in the 1970s.

He tweeted: “The Specials are a tribute to how British culture is envied by Caribbean immigrants but their lead singer’s on-stage demeanor is a reminder that they’re doing the job. seriously challenged our perception of who we were in the late 1970s. RIP Terry Hall.

The head of the Boy George Cultural Club called it a “sad day”, writing on Twitter: “So sad to hear about Terry Hall! Absolutely love him as an artist.

Singer-songwriter Elvis Costello tweeted: “So sad to hear of Terry Hall’s passing last night from Lynval Golding.

“Terry’s voice is the perfect instrument for the real and essential songs in ‘The Specials’. That honesty is heard in so many of his songs in joy and sorrow. My condolences to his family and friends.”

Lightning Seeds head Ian Broudie kept the tribute brief, posting an emoji of a broken heart along with a photo of himself with Hall.
