New car sales break 100,000 while electric sales jump 85 percent

New car sales just surpassed 100,000 this year as more people buy electric vehicles.

More than 14,500 new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered in the first nine months of the year — 86 percent more than the corresponding period in 2021. Electric vehicles accounted for almost a third (29 percent) of all new vehicle sales in September. according to SIMI numbers that have just been released.

It is also significant that the best-selling car in September – regardless of the drive type – was the electric Tesla Model 3.

The increase in purchases is mainly due to the increased offer from car manufacturers, especially in the family segment. The shortage was acutely felt and held back countless sales.

It will be interesting to see what buying levels look like for the rest of the year. Usually sales are pretty low, but things are not normal anymore.

And there will likely be a big surge in EV bookings for the new year, with the SEAI grant in doubt from July next year.

But now, when sales of hybrids (19.67 percent), electric cars (14.3 percent) and plug-ins (6.79 percent) are added together, “electrified” cars make up more than two out of every five registered so far this year vehicles from . Gasoline registrations were up 30.09 percent, with diesel now trailing just 26.99 percent.

In general, new car sales are only slightly up year-on-year, according to SIMI data, but are 11 percent behind 2019 (pre-Covid).

The figures also show that new registrations for September are up 42.5 percent (6,340) compared to September 2021 (4,449), while year-to-date registrations are up 0.7 percent to 101,492.

Used car imports for September (4,344) are down 12.4 percent while year-to-date they are down 26.8 percent to 37,418.

Brian Cooke, SIMI’s general manager, said the early budget without VRT increases and the extension of EV grants for the first half of next year offers some stability in a highly volatile retail environment.

He hoped this would encourage car buyers to go to dealerships during the crucial sales period between now and the end of the year.

But he added: “New vehicle registrations hampered by global supply issues remain a challenge.”

The five best-selling car brands so far are:

1. TOYOTA, 2. HYUNDAI, 3. VOLKSWAGEN, 4. KIA 5. SKODA.

The five best models are:

1st HYUNDAI TUCSON 2nd TOYOTA COROLLA 3rd KIA SPORTAGE 4th TOYOTA C-HR 5th TOYOTA RAV 4th
