Sir Ian McKellen will have a theater in Edinburgh named in his honor following his record run at this year’s Fringe Festival.
he Ian McKellen Theater at Saint Stephens has been named after the veteran actor’s Hamlet season at the 2022 Film Festival.
The performance, which is a combination of dance and theatre, debuted at the 450-seat Ashton Hall at Saint Stephens, an all-new year performance venue in the Scottish capital.
Since The Fringe ended, a second 300-seat theater named after Sir Ian has been created beneath Ashton Hall.
Hamlet was viewed by a record 13,000 spectators and was named Best Event Theater at Fringe by Theater Weekly.
The actor performed with the Edinburgh Festival Ballet in a show directed and choreographed by Peter Schaufuss.
Sir Ian delivered the play’s famous speeches and lectures, and shared Hamlet’s role on stage with lead dancer Johan Christensen.
“Peter Schaufuss’ unique contribution to the cultural life of Edinburgh, during and beyond the annual festival, is now enhanced by his new theater at St Stephens,” said Sir Ian.
“I’m honored that it will bear my name.”
Schaufuss said: “Ian is the greatest actor of his generation and we are delighted to have him leading our company in Hamlet.
