New Fascinating Video Shows Space Serpent Gliding Across Sun’s Surface

A SPACE snake was observed gliding across the Sun’s surface.

Solar Orbiter discovered a tube of cool atmospheric gases winding in the shape of a snake.

This Sun Serpent came long before a much larger eruption.

It was seen on September 5, 2022 while Solar Orbiter, an Extreme Ultraviolet Imager, was approaching the Sun for a pass that occurred on October 12, 2022. European Space Agency said.

What’s been dubbed a snake is actually a self-formed tunnel of cool plasma, being pushed together by the magnetic fields of the warmer plasma that surrounds it in the rest of the Sun’s atmosphere.

In order for matter to reach the plasma state, gas must reach such high temperatures that they start losing their outer electrons.

The loss of electrons creates an electronic charge that makes the plasma vulnerable to magnetic fields.

The lead investigator, David Long of Mullard Space Science Laboratory (UCL), UK, said: “They flow plasma from side to side, but the magnetic field is really twisted. So you get this change in direction because we’re looking down at a twisted structure.”

The image we’re seeing down here on Earth is a time-lapse movie from Solar Orbiter, ESA said.

While it was a nearly three-hour journey in real time, ESA estimates it must have traveled “170 kilometers per second” to cross the Sun’s surface.

Starting from a sun-active region, this plasma would later erupt, blasting billions of tons of plasma into space.

This event, captured by the Energetic Particle Detector, is believed to reveal some new insights into “space weather” that can disrupt satellites and other ground-based technologies,” ESA said.
