HORSE riders will get priority over cars on UK roads under the new Motorway Code.
The new guidelines, effective January 29, include a controversial new “”sugar pyramid“.
It lists the followers how much damage can they do – and advise heavier riders to be extra careful.
The hierarchy dictates that standard cars must be extra careful around cyclists, pedestrians, and horses.
The new Highway Code pyramid is as follows:
- Horse rider
- Car / taxi
- Large passenger vehicles or express delivery vehicles such as buses and HGV
Drivers will be advised to pass pedestrians on horseback at 10 mph, down from the current 15 km/h.
And motorists must give priority to riders crossing the street at junctions – no matter who comes first.
Follow British Horse Association (BHS), two horses are killed on UK roads every week.
A Department for Transport spokesperson told The Sun: “The proposed upcoming changes to the Highway Code will improve safety for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders. “
BHS Safety Director Alan Hiscox told Horses & Hounds: “I did a little jig when I read them!
“I really think this will be an important step forward for the safety of the horses on the road.”
