New musical drama telling the life story of John Hume

To mark the 25th anniversary of Northern Ireland’s historic peace accord, a new musical drama based on the life of the late Nobel Prize winner John Hume will be performed.

The production, honoring the longtime SDLP leader and key architect of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, will premiere next spring.

Incredible is performed in Hume’s native city of Derry to commemorate 25 years since the signing of the accord that largely ended years of violent conflict.

The play is performed at Derry’s Guildhall and presented by actors from the city’s Playhouse Music Theater Company.

The drama will tell the life of Nobel Peace Prize winner Mr Hume and his wife Pat, who both died within the last two years.

It is created in partnership with the John and Pat Hume Foundation.

Running for eight nights with the final performance on April 7, 2023, it will be shown live to a global audience as part of a series of events marking the 25th anniversary of the agreement.

Incredible brings together writer Damian Gorman, composer Brian O’Doherty and producer/director Kieran Griffiths.

The Humes’ daughter, Mo Hume, said the production was a fitting tribute.

“We are confident that The Playhouse will honor my father and present his life and work with great integrity but also joy,” she said.

“My father’s career had many triumphs, many difficulties, but he was a warm, kind and funny family man, a man who loved to sing.

“He was a very proud Derry man and I know it will be emotional to see his presence on the Guildhall stage.”

Incredible is the second part of a peacemaking trilogy planned by The Playhouse.

It comes after his successful White Handkerchief production in January, which marked the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Derry.

Director Griffiths said, “While John Hume has been described as a titan, a giant, and a hero of peacemaking and reconciliation, Beyond Belief will, in his words and music, reach out to the man – the man who accomplished everything he did , not superficially, without a fight or alone, but as a person.” New musical drama telling the life story of John Hume
