NEW PlayStation 5 models have landed in Australia that are significantly lighter than previous consoles.
This is the second redesign of the console since its release almost two years ago.
Previously, Sony reduced the size of the PS5’s heatsink, a component that helps cool the hardware.
Not only has this saved the company money, but it has also helped reduce the weight of its gargantuan console.
The latest redesign of both the digital and disc versions of the console, model numbers CFI-1202B and CFI-1202A respectively, has now been spotted in Australia.
The digital version of PS5 has lost 200g in the redesign, while the disc version is a whopping 300g lighter.
The current generation of the PlayStation console is also considered to be the company’s heaviest, starting life at almost five kilos.
However, with the two redesigns, the heavier disc-based console is now lighter than the digital version at launch.
It’s still significantly larger than any of its direct competitors, the Xbox Series S or X.
The new redesign comes less than a week after Sony announced that the price of PS5s has increased in almost every region outside the US.
Europe will be hit hardest by a €50 price increase, while the UK will see a £30 price increase.
Sony cites the high inflation rates worldwide as the reason for the price increase.
However, both Xbox and Nintendo have issued statements that they will not increase the price of their consoles.
If the latest redesign is like the previous one, then Sony is trying to save money on parts in conjunction with the price increase.
It also appears that Sony is looking into other revenue streams for the company.
PlayStation recently acquired Savage Game Studios, a mobile device developer who will be working to create mobile experiences based on Sony games.
