An unusual new symptom of the Omicron Covid variant has prompted a surge in cases among Brits, according to a tracker app.
Brits using the ZOE tracker app have cited earaches as a new symptom of the virus, with some complaining of ringing after contracting Omicron.
As a result, the app has included the symptom in its weekly ranking of the most reported Covid symptoms. reports the Daily Star.
Ear pain has been observed in omicron cases in the past, but only now has it become more common than initially thought, according to reports.
Last year, a study by a team of Stanford University experts and Dr. Konstantina Stankovic discovered that the Omicron variant could cause ear problems.
The study reported symptoms such as severe ear pain, ear deafness, and even temporary hearing loss that can persist even after the infection has cleared.

dr Stankovic also revealed that these symptoms can also occur in fully vaccinated individuals.
Speaking to the Times Now News Portal, Dr. Stankovic: “Pain is often associated with ringing in the ears. Surprisingly, although less frequently, these symptoms can also occur in patients who have been vaccinated with a full cycle.
She also advised people with hearing loss, ringing in the ears and dizziness not to ignore these symptoms and take a test anyway.
Brits will no longer be able to have test kits for free after the scheme is discontinued and those who want to test will have to buy them from local pharmacies or online.

Covid infection numbers have hit a record high across the UK as free Covid-19 testing comes to an end for millions in England.
An estimated 4.9 million people in the UK had Covid-19 in the week to March 2, up from 4.3 million the previous week, the Office for National Statistics said.
ONS data show an estimated one in 13 people in England had Covid this week, up from one in 16 the week before, and in Wales it’s one in 14 people, down from one in 16.
Both are record highs and it comes after experts warned that at such levels, anyone in the population who can get Covid is likely to get it.
