Newcastle United have inquired about a potential deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers after missing out on Kristoffer Ajer.

It is according to 90Min, who claim that Newcastle are now in contact about a centre-back with Steve Bruce desperate for a new centre-back.

Newcastle have missed out on Norwegian Ajer, who left Celtic for Brentford this week.

Northern Echo announced in May that Newcastle want Carter-Vickers, but only a second-choice target behind Ajer.

With Ajer now off the table, the move for Carter-Vickers is even more – especially when Magpies coach Graeme Jones suggests a move after working with the Americans at Bournemouth.

The 23-year-old is back at Tottenham and kicks off a pre-season friendly against Colchester United on Wednesday night.

An exit is still expected for Carter-Vickers, who have few regular first-team opportunities under Nuno Espirito Santo next season.

Daily log recorded earlier this month that Carter-Vickers trusts the signing of Celtic this summer with new boss Ange Postecoglou looking for an addition to the defence.

We could now see a battle between Celtic and Newcastle for the Carter-Vickers, and the 23-year-old could soon have a big pick.
