Newcastle trigger Chris Wood’s £25m transfer release clause.. with Toon to face angry Burnley in the six-point final day

CHRIS WOOD will join Newcastle today in a £25m shock from relegation rivals Burnley.

The angry Clarets did not want to sell their Kiwi striker but was powerless after the Magpies activated his release clause.

Personal terms have been agreed with Wood, 30, to become the second signing of the Saudi era after the arrival of Kieran Trippier.

Newcastle’s interest in the New Zealand international grew over the weekend and he traveled to Tyneside on Tuesday to complete his medical procedures.

It’s a huge blow for Burnley, who are 18th in the table and just ahead of Newcastle on goal difference – and, incredible, the two clubs head to head on the final day of the season!

The 6ft 2in tall target player has started every game this season for Sean Dyche’s side, scoring three goals.

Wood has hit doubles and is Burnley’s top scorer in his last four campaigns at Turf Moor, and as well as directly undermining opponents, Mags boss Eddie Howe believes that he will immediately improve his team while Dyche will want to reinvest money into the squad.

Howe has been desperate for more firepower after Callum Wilson was ruled out for at least two months with a calf tear, and is likely to catch Wood himself in Saturday’s major relegation clash.

Attention will now turn to owning a centre-back but Newcastle are still looking for another younger striker.

They held talks with the French side Reims about star Huge Ekitike but faced a four-way argument to secure his services.

Ekitike, 19, is the top scorer in Europe’s top five leagues with eight goals in 17 games and has attracted the interest of West Ham, Brentford and Brighton.

Reims is holding out for £30m plus a hefty sale fee, well above Newcastle’s valuation for a young player who made his debut last August and has no experience as a substitute.

Howe also had an eye on Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, but the Portuguese were reluctant to sell in January.

9Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke is another option, with Howe a fan signing him from Liverpool for the Cherries in 2019.
