Newcastle manager Eddie Howe says Kieran Trippier will return to action this season after successfully having surgery on the broken foot he suffered in the match against Aston Villa

Kieran Trippier will play again for Newcastle this season after a successful surgery on his broken foot.

The England defender has been assisted to maintain his “positive, healthy” influence on By Eddie Howe while detoxing.

Trippier has scored in consecutive games in United’s three-match winning streak, but broke his fifth ankle against Aston Villa.

Howe will start Emile Krafth, with Javier Manquillo’s ankle injury keeping him out of the next trip. West Ham but not a long term problem.

Howe said: “His surgery went well. I don’t know how long he will be out but we hope to have him back before the season is over. It was a significant injury.

“We’ll see how his initial rehab goes, the show was a success. It’s an opportunity for others to step up. He has scored two goals and decisive moments for us, but we are confident that we have the quality to replace him.

“He is an inspirational figure. Since knowing Kieran in his youth, he has changed. Not just the game but also his personality. I cannot praise him enough.

“The players have found him an inspirational figure. That won’t change. He will support them from the training ground and in and around them.

“He is a positive person. He knows there’s a problem. His reaction was not bowing and isolating. He is busy around the players radiating good energy. He was infected so the response was positive.”

Howe said Krafth would be a good replacement and added: “I like him as a person and as a player. Against Manchester United He was excellent in attack and defence. He is a very good runner and this is a good opportunity for him to have a place in the team.”

Howe says that the modern full-back is very influential these days in setting a positive tone with a favorable first pass.

“Innovative in play, they have to find the first pass to set up an attack,” he explains. They are under pressure on the touchline and have to find a way out.

“It’s easy to play negatively but Kieran plays positively.

“When you add defensive responsibilities, they have work that goes up and down and it’s an all-inclusive job for the team.”
