Nicolas Cage’s latest project, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, has received rave reviews after debuting at a film festival this month.

The actor, 58, plays a fictionalized version of himself in the film, who attends the birthday party of a dangerous supervillain, played by Game of Thrones’ 46-year-old Pedro Pascal.

The film made its debut at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, just days ago – with the project since then receiving rave reviews from critics who have seen it.

It was so well received by a select group of critics at its premiere that it now has a rare 100% “new” rating on the review aggregator. Rotten Tomatoes.

At the time of writing, the comedy has 15 reviews on the platform, which currently has no response from the general audience as it has not yet been released in cinemas.

Reviews – which have been uploaded in the past few days – have been rave, with some critics saying the film will “leave you with a grin on your face.”

Rotten Tomatoes ranks movies into three categories, based on critical feedback – as opposed to audience reviews. Those with less than 60 percent positive reviews are “rotten”.

However, movies with scores between 60 and 100% – like the new Cage movies – are considered “fresh”, although they can then be upgraded to “certified new” status.

“Certified Fresh” is awarded to films that have a score between 75 and 100 percent but have at least 80 critics. It stays on until the score drops below 70 percent.

This means that if the Unbearable Weight of Mass Talent continues to receive rave reviews as more reviewers upload their responses, it could become “newly certified”.

The synopsis reads: “Creation unfinished and facing financial ruin, the fictional version of Cage had to accept a $1 million offer to attend a superstar’s birthday. dangerous villains.”

It teases that things take a “hugely unexpected turn” as Cage is recruited by an intelligence agent – played by 42-year-old Tiffany Haddish – and must control “iconic” characters and most loved” to save himself and his loved ones.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent will be released in the UK on April 22.
