VIDEOS have surfaced online from a previously undiscovered area in Nier: Automata – and it has stunned the community.
Dubbed “The Church” by online communities, the area featured a large underground area found through a secret door.
When players tried to replicate the doorway in their own games, they couldn’t, leading many to believe it was a version-exclusive area that was later patched.
Inside were a number of cryptic items that hinted at another game in the series, Nier: Replicant, expanding the lore.
The strangest thing about the church was not only that no one else could find it, but that it was well beyond the current capabilities of those looking to mod the game.
There was a boss fight, cutscenes, all new geometry, all Nier: Automata style.
Speculations began as to what it could be.
Some thought it was an area that was cut out of the game’s final build.
Others believed it was the game’s designer, Yoko Taro himself, hoping to spark interest before the Switch launches or before a new project is announced.
Yoko Taro fanned the flames of those rumors when he told his Twitter followers that the response to the church was somewhere in his feed.
However, the video makers have revealed what the church was about.
On Twitch, in a now-deleted stream that has been re-uploaded multiple times, the three designers talked about their mod.
The team consisted of a level designer named DevolasRevenge, a Blender modeler named Woeful_Wolf_ and a programmer named RaiderB.
After showing footage of the church, they introduced themselves with an explanation.
It said: “Everything we shared was entirely in-game, no editing was used.
“We loved all the discussions and theories – it’s been an amazing journey.
“It was inspiring to see the community coming together after so many years, it made all the hard work worth it.”
They explained that the Church is actually a mod they developed using entirely new tools they designed.
The mod for the church was released immediately after the stream so players could see the area for themselves.
The mystery was created to promote the new modding tools the team has been developing.
All of the tools they develop are released open source, which means anyone can start modding these impressive areas themselves in Nier: Automata.
