Nine out of 10 people who died from Covid were over the age of 65, the counties with the highest number of deaths revealed


More than nine out of ten Covid-19 deaths in the first two years of the pandemic occurred in people over the age of 65.

That comes from new data released as part of the Central Statistics Offices (CSO) ‘Frontier Series’, which found that between March 1, 2020 and February 28, 2022, Covid-19 was the “underlying cause of death.” “ 5,384 cases were identified.

Dublin recorded the highest number of Covid-related deaths during that period, with 1,883 deaths, 35 per cent of the national total.

512 deaths were reported in Cork City and County over the same period, including 279 in Kildare, 263 in Limerick, 200 in Mayo and 182 in Donegal.

The Dublin City (LEA) local constituency recorded 17 per cent of the national total at 915, while 390 deaths were recorded in Dublin South, 278 in Dublin Fingal and 264 in the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown area.

The highest number of deaths outside of Dublin reported by LEA was Cork County at 284.

Meanwhile, the lowest figure was reported in Leitrim at 26, followed by Galway City and Longford at 36 each.

Looking at the data by age, 91 percent of deaths occurred in people 65 years and older, with 75 percent in people 75 and older and 42 percent in people 85 and older.

505 deaths were recorded among people under the age of 65, including 127 among those aged 45 to 55, 51 among those aged 25 to 44 and five among those under the age of 25, including one child under the age of 14.

In terms of where the deaths occurred, 3,176 (59 percent) people died in general and orthopedic hospitals, 1,564 (29 percent) in nursing homes.

Deaths in residences accounted for 4.8 per cent (257), with 3.4 per cent (183) recorded in community hospitals. No deaths in maternity or pediatric hospitals were reported during this period.

The CSO said: “The analysis focuses on deaths where Covid-19 was determined to be the underlying cause of death. A death certificate may list multiple causes of death based on which the UCOD is identified by applying specific World Health Organization guidelines.”
