A young Brazilian boy had the shock of his life after an impromptu toilet break during a school football game when he encountered a wild cougar in the toilet stall.

Nine-year-old David Miguel admitted that “my heart almost stopped” when he pushed open the bin door to find a hissing and snarling cougar on the other side, who immediately rushed outside to tell his father.

The incident happened at the Martha Drummond Fonseca Municipal School in the municipality of Nova Lima, near the city of Belo Horizonte in the south-east of the country.

Young David told local reporters: “I was shaking like jelly – it got grr and my heart almost stopped.”

His father Rodrigo Almeida, 34, admitted he also got the shock of his life, especially when he saw what the creature was: “I thought it was going to be an ocelot, a feral dog or something else.

“When I saw that the animal was so big, I ran back.”

The school contacted the local fire department and Military Environmental Police, who rushed to the scene, where they managed to tranquilize the animal with a tranquilizer dart before releasing the young female back into the wild.

The Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), which helped return the creature to its natural habitat, said the feral cat was unharmed in the incident.

Cougars can grow up to 2.40 m long and weigh around 80 kg in the wild and are the most widespread large wild land mammals in the western hemisphere.

Veterinarian Marcos Mourao, who helped release the animal, explained that deforestation is leading to an increase in wildlife approaching urban areas.

He said: “We know this is due to increasing deforestation, large wildfires and the destruction of the natural habitat of these animals.

“Then they end up fleeing in cities.”

In the event of an encounter with a dangerous wild animal, Mourao advised residents to avoid making too much noise, exit the area slowly and contact emergency services immediately.
