previous acquisition of Next Level Game (developer of Luigi’s Mansion 3 and the upcoming Mario Strikers: Battle League), SRD does not develop its own games, but instead supports the programming of other studios’ titles.
This means it’s unlikely we’ll see any major new announcements as a result of the acquisition; instead it will increase Nintendo’s development efficiency. No numbers were shared on the cost of the move, but Nintendo noted that “the acquisition will have only a small effect on Nintendo’s results.”
The company said in early February that it is not all that interested in the acquisition of third parties in the wake of Xbox acquires Activision Blizzard and Sony buys Bungie, as it prioritizes building its own development studios. President Shuntaro Furukawa said that any acquisition would need to preserve ‘Nintendo DNA’ – which an SRD purchase will almost certainly do.
SRD has worked with Nintendo since the NES and has since worked on nearly 100 of its games on countless consoles. In the earlier days, it supported the development of everything from the original NES version of Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda. Most recently on Switch, it worked on games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Ring Fit Adventure.
